Can We Prevent Osteoporosis?

September 18, 2009

by Ella Bowman, M.D.

It’s always best to first talk to your doctor about your risks for osteoporosis and about medicines that can help prevent this common but unnecessary disease.

Another good idea is to have a bone mineral density (BMD) screening every two years. Medicare pays for the test if you have certain risk factors, including a history of fractures, loss of height in adulthood, a small/thin body build or being post-menopausal.

Also, be sure to take or get plenty of calcium daily. People over age 50 should get 1200 mg to 1500 mg/day from food sources, such as dairy products, green vegetables or supplements. Go outside in the sunshine; just 10 to 15 minutes a few days a week can help replenish your body’s vitamin D source, which is essential, along with calcium, to build healthy and strong bones.

Be active daily; even going for a short walk helps maintain bone strength.
